MODERN MANNERS? is the title of this unit.But what are manners?

MANNERS: A way of behaving that is considered acceptable in your country or culture.


Let's begin this lesson by revising some phone language vocabulary. 

1- Listen and match the phone sentences with the sounds:



2- Explain in your own words what these are:
Skype- a screensaver - silent/ vibrate mode - quiet zones- instant messaging


3- We're going to read an extract from Debrett's guide to mobile phone etiquette. Then answer these questions:




a- Do you agree with what Debrett's says? 
b- Do you ever do any of these things?
c- Are they a problem where you live?
d- Are there any other things people do with their phones that annoy you?


4- Match the highlighted phrases in the text with their meaning. Two of the phrases match the same meaning:

A- You don't need to do this.
B- Don't do this. It isn't allowed/ permitted.
C- It's necessary or compulsory to do this.
D- It's a good idea to do this.

Let's concentrate in the grammar aspect now. In this lesson the main grammar point is focused on MODALS OF OBLIGATION. Watch this video to have a clear idea.


5- Work with the activities in the GRAMMAR BANK, page 139 (activities a and b). 

HOMEWORK:
1- Use these questions as a guide to write a composition about you and your phone. Write about 70 words.


2- Read the definition of manners at the beginning of this lesson. Make sentences using SHOULD/SHOULDN'T for something which you think is  a question of manners, and with MUST / MUSTN'T / HAVE TO for something which is a law or a rule.
